THE CHARTERHOUSE OBSERVATORY

The Charterhouse Centre observatory was built in the early 1970s and houses an enormous "Fullerscopes" 18.5 inch Newtonian reflector telescope, believed to be the largest in the South West available for use by organised educational groups.  The observatory itself is large enough to cater for a whole group on a dark, starry night.

Stars Over Somerset Evenings - Autumn 2012

Practical and informative astronomy evenings for all ages

Led by experienced astronomer Adrian Dening, the Charterhouse Centre opens its doors to the general public for two evenings to discover the mysteries of the Universe and de-mystify the equipment used to unravel them.

Sunday 21st October 2012 commencing at 7pm

Have you ever found yourself gazing up at the night sky, pondering why stars appear to move or why the Moon looks different every time you see it?  Maybe you have considered astronomy as a hobby or even already have a telescope tucked away in a cupboard.  Do you fancy holding a real meteorite that was once part of the Asteroid Belt?

Following an informative talk indoors on general astronomy, observing tips and a break for coffee, we will be venturing into the observatory dome to conduct our own adventure into space.

Our “special guest” for the evening will be a large piece of the Campo del Cielo meteorite that crashed into the Earth around 4500 years ago!

Jupiter and its Galilean Moons seen through the telescope The Campo del Cielo meteorite was once
(not bad for an iPhone held up against the eyepiece) part of the Asteroid Belt!

Sunday 18th November 2012 commencing at 7pm

Your chance to take part in a "Telescope Masterclass".  Whether you are considering the purchase of your first  telescope or are struggling to get to grips with one you already own, this evening will provide you with all the knowledge you need to obtain the most from the instrument.

Following a formal talk on types of telescopes and a coffee break, everyone is invited to take part in a workshop where there will be the opportunity to explore the workings of your own telescope if you have brought it along and learn how to set it up correctly.

Practice makes Perfect...........so we will then be venturing outside to make our own observations of the night sky, taking advantage of the dark skies over the Mendip Hills.  Once again, the enormous telescope in the observatory dome will be available for use.

Learn how to correctly adjust your telescope mount ..........and easily locate objects in the night sky

The cost of each evening is £10 per person with a reduced rate of £5.00 for children.

Booking is essential as places are limited and warm clothing is recommended as we will be spending time outside.

Please click on the link below to download a booking form where you may choose either or both sessions:

Please note - actual use of the Charterhouse telescope will be dependent on there being clear skies that evening.

As the main telescope eyepiece can only be reached by climbing a tall step ladder - alternative telescopes will be available for anyone requiring them.
