We are delighted to announce that one of our former Spy Skool students, Hannah from Red Maids School in Bristol, has just won the prestigious Ruby Redfort code-making competition.  Hannah's team secured their place in the finals at New College School, Oxford by creating codes and were then faced with challenging problem-solving questions using their lateral thinking and mathematics skills.  Here is a link to the Newspaper Report about their success.  Well done Hannah - we are very proud of you!

To make our science courses more accessible to all students, we are currently negotiating to run a series of "Science Fun Days" at a local venue in 2012.  The days will be planned to coincide with school holidays and cover many of the topics we offer on our weekend courses.  Please stay tuned for more news.

As this will probably be the last update to the web site before Christmas, we would like to take the opportunity to wish all our students, past and present, an enjoyable holiday and successful New Year!

The next iteration of our Stars Over Somerset astronomy evening, suitable for the whole family, has been scheduled for Sunday 18th March 2012.  The event is to be held at the Charterhouse Observatory on the Mendips.  The last evening was a complete sell-out, so early booking is strongly recommended and an application form is available here.

We have just agreed the details for an exciting new course at Kilve Court next May.  Working with our colleague, John Winder, we will be running an Explosive Science weekend that combines 17th century artillery mathematics with 21st century rocket telemetry.  Places are sure to fill quickly for this unique opportunity to fire mortars and rockets from Kilve Court's playing field!

Just back from the Radio Pirates course at Kilve Court where we had great fun running our Kilve FM pirate radio station and spending a day with the BBC Somerset outside broadcast unit.  Many thanks to Paul George from BBC Somerset for giving the students such a memorable experience.  We have added a new Kilve FM page to the contents and from here, students can download an mp3 copy of their October 2011 broadcast.

I have finally managed to complete a long-awaited update to the web site.  The AGAT course details have been completely re-vamped and now have the current information for all 21 different weekend and week-long sessions that we run.  You will see a couple of exciting new courses Hi-Flyers and Rocket Racers that we will be running at Kilve Court next spring.

METEORITES FROM OUTER SPACE & THE BBC SOMERSET OUTSIDE BROADCAST UNIT !

A very exciting few weeks for us!  Firstly, we have managed to obtain a huge piece of the Campo del Cielo meteorite that crashed into Argentina over 4500 years ago!  Needles to say, the meteorite will be making a "guest appearance" on all our future space courses and students will have the opportunity to examine it first-hand!

BBC Somerset have confirmed that they will be attending our Radio Pirates course in October with their outside broadcast unit.  In addition to a tour of the mobile studio and providing guidance for the students' own radio station, there will be a limited opportunity to take part in a live broadcast from the grounds of Kilve Court - definitely unique and not to be missed!
