BRIGHT SPARKS

Electronics, Maths and Physics

If you like taking things apart and finding out how they work then this course is for you!   Whilst we wouldn’t suggest that you ever try dismantling electronic equipment at home, it is exactly what we propose to do on this course!  We have all had fun at school experimenting with simple electronic circuits, but if you take a look at the circuit board from a piece of equipment, there are hundreds of strange devices and thousands of complex connections.  What do they all do?

This course provides an excellent opportunity to explore the world of electronics at a much higher level than that required by the National Curriculum and discover how different components interact with each other.  In our electronics laboratory, we will be designing and building our own circuits to learn, for example, how a transistor can act as an invisible switch.

In addition to learning basic soldering skills, students will also be given the opportunity to use professional test equipment and by the end of the course, they will be able to explain in detail exactly how those all-so-common plug-in power supplies convert the UK mains into the necessary voltage to power their game station or MP-3 player.

In a Presentation to Parents at the end of the course, students will pass-on the knowledge they have gained and showcase their newly acquired soldering skills.

After receiving guidance on safety, students try their hand at soldering for the first time Participants have the opportunity to use a wide range of electronic test equipment
